The Wu Ling area of Mount Li lies between 1800 and 2000 meters in altitude. Oolong tea production began in 1975 with a planting of 6 hectares on former orchard land that was part of Chiang Kai Shek's summer estate.
When oolong tea production began there was a problem getting the oolong to market because of the bad conditions of the roads. The Taiwan government, recognizing the commercial value of Wu Ling oolong, stepped up road maintenance and began paving the major roads of the area in 1988.
The tea growing areas of Wu Ling are ideal for oolong. The area maintains an average annual temperature of about 20 degree Celsius and the surrounding area is densely forested and unspoiled. There are several rivers that traverse the area and clouds and fog are present year-round. Wu Ling oolong tea is nourished with the rain and mist to produce leaves which are thick and juicy. The tea grows slowly and there are only 3 harvests per year.
Due to its natural beauty, Wu Ling is a popular destination for those seeking a respite from busy city life. The nearby Wu Ling farm is a recreational resort which offers Taiwan people a chance to experience seasonal changes - an unfamiliar experience to most people in Taiwan.
Wu Ling farm was established in 1963 to provide employment for retired servicemen. It covers more than 700 hectares of land and is used to grow high-mountain fruits (pears, peaches, apples, etc.) and vegetables (cabbage, spinach, etc.) as well as oolong tea.
Oolong tea (also spelled wulong tea or wu long tea) grown in the Wu Ling area is distinct in the tenderness and size of the leaf. This oolong offers plenty of flavour with up to 7 infusions possible while still providing a good tasting brew. It has a fragrant sweetness reminiscent of the fruit that used to grow on the land.
Oolong tea from the Wu Ling area is the most sought-after (and expensive) oolong tea in Taiwan. The majority of the oolong tea produced at Wu Ling is destined for domestic consumption, so we are pleased to be able to offer this fine Taiwan oolong tea to tea lovers around the world.
