Li Shan

Li Shan (Pear Mountain) is part of the Jade mountain range. This is where the highest mountains of Taiwan are found. The Jade Mountain range includes Hsiukulan, Guanshan and Sinkang.

Li Shan is located in Ho Ping Township, Taichung County. It used to be called Sha La Mao. It is a popular summer resort noted for its production of pears, apples and peaches. Li Shan has beautiful mountainous scenery and is famous for it high grade oolong tea.

Li Shan Oolong Tea

Li Shan is the highest tea-growing region in Taiwan. Oolong tea plantations lie between 1800 meters and 2650 meters. These altitudes provide ideal conditions for oolong tea. Li Shan has a low temperature year-round with abundant moisture. The higher altitudes see winter snow and even during the spring oolong tea harvest there is a chill in the air. At an altitude of 2600 meters there are only two oolong tea harvests per year. The lower altitudes on Li Shan can produce 3 harvests of oolong tea per year.

The winter harvest begins in September of the lunar calendar while the Spring harvest starts in June of the lunar calendar.

Tsuei Luan area

The Tsuei Luan area of Li Shan lies between 1700 and 2100 meters. It was first planted in 1990 with an experimental seeding of 3 hectares. The conditions proved to be ideal for oolong tea and the current oolong tea production area is 130 hectares. Average annual production is more than 700 kilograms.

Tsuei Luan oolong tea is a prime example of a fine Li Shan oolong tea. It is characterized by the thickness of the leaf and its sweet, fragrant taste which fills the mouth and throat with a pleasing aftertaste. Tsuei Luan tea has a supple fragrance that is quite unique amongst all Taiwan oolong tea.
